As artists, we’re often asked where our inspiration comes from. People imagine dramatic landscapes, faraway places, or extraordinary moments. But for me, inspiration is much closer to home. It begins the moment I step into my garden.
Over the years, my garden has become more than just a place to tend flowers and enjoy a morning cup of tea. It has become my sanctuary, my studio, and my greatest source of artistic inspiration. Every season brings something new to observe, reminding me that beauty often lies in the smallest details.

One morning, while watching quietly from my window, a long-tailed tit appeared among the branches. These tiny birds rarely stay still for long, darting from twig to twig with endless energy. Yet for a fleeting moment, it paused just long enough for me to admire its delicate feathers and curious expression. That brief encounter became the inspiration for one of my favourite paintings. Capturing its character wasn’t just about painting a bird—it was about preserving a moment of wonder.

On another day, I noticed a red headed bird which looked like a woodpecker. I watched as it searched the bark of an old tree, completely absorbed in its work. There was something wonderfully determined about it. Painting the woodpecker allowed me to celebrate not only its striking colours but also the quiet resilience of nature that often goes unnoticed.
Not all inspiration arrives with wings. Sometimes it sits quietly on a branch or rests in a fruit bowl. One simple apple became the subject of a still life painting. Its rich colour, gentle curves, and natural imperfections reminded me that ordinary objects can hold extraordinary beauty when we take the time to really look at them.

These paintings all began with observation. Before I ever picked up a brush, I simply paused and paid attention. In today’s busy world, we’re encouraged to move quickly from one thing to the next, but nature has a different rhythm. It asks us to slow down, to notice, and to appreciate.

I’ve learned that creativity isn’t always about searching for something new. Sometimes it’s about seeing familiar things with fresh eyes. A bird perched on a branch, sunlight falling across an apple, or the changing colours of the seasons can all become stories waiting to be painted.

The garden reminds me every day that inspiration doesn’t have to be found in distant places. It can be discovered just beyond the back door, in the gentle flutter of feathers, the texture of bark, or the fruit nurtured through the seasons.
The art of looking closer has taught me that beauty is everywhere… We simply need to pause long enough to see it.
I hope that as you look through my paintings of the long-tailed tit, the woodpecker, and the apple, you’ll be encouraged to look a little closer at the world around you. You never know what might inspire your own creativity, or simply brighten your day.

Sometimes, the greatest masterpieces begin with the smallest moments.
